So I guess I’m gonna go ahead and be the weirdo who admits to liking the 3DS Smash Bros graphic style (right images) more than the WiiU one (left images).

skip ltd’s “bit Generations” series played a big part in my falling in love with games again in the mid-aughts, so I was very happy to revisit the series, ever so briefly, for this week’s Game That Tune.
Also, I watched the Cornelius performance on Yo Gabba Gabba! like a dozen times on YouTube this week just because it got stuck in my head. Fantasma is such a fun album and “New Music Machine” is one of my favorite songs ever.
Humblebrag: I actually got an email “thank you” from Cornelius’s agent once because he loved the banner ads I made when Pitchfork aired the whole set of Sensuous videos.

With Bandai Namco handling development of the next Nintendo Smash Bros game, I already expect a few Namco characters to sneak their way into the smash-fest. Namco has already worked in tandem with Nintendo and Sega on the wonderful Mario Kart arcade games (which incorporated Namco’s Pac-Man and Tamogotchi characters) and Nintendo has formed a solid partnership with Sega over the past generation. Namco is also currently working on a crossover game with Sega and Capcom for the 3DS using characters from all three publishers and Namco also worked/is working on crossover games with their own Tekken franchise and Capcom’s Street Fighter franchise. Capcom is also working on a 3DS crossover game with their own Phoenix Wright (who recently popped up in their own Marvel vs Capcom brawler) and Professor Layton, a character from Level 5’s series of puzzle games that is published by Nintendo everywhere outside of Japan. In the US, at least, Layton is bandied about as just as much of a Nintendo mascot as Kirby. That’s a lot of crossover love. That in mind, I’ve started thinking about what characters I’d like to see in a more inter-company crossover-friendly Smash Bros title (not including characters in previous Smash games):
Nintendo:
Professor Layton
Mii (with Wii Sports-based attacks)
Chibi-Robo (I will never give up on this. Make it happen. He had trophies and stickers in the last two Smash games. Just put him in the game.)
Namco:
The Prince/King of All Cosmos
Pac-Man (preferably from Pac-Man 2: The New Adventures)
Klonoa
Dig Dug
Sega:
Ulala (Space Channel 5)
NiGHTS
Beat (from Jet Set Radio)
Vectorman
Capcom:
Phoenix Wright
Mega Man
One of the cats from Monster Hunter
Strider
